About Password Generation
Strong passwords are essential for protecting your online accounts. Our generator picks every character independently and uniformly from the character set you choose, using the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with rejection sampling so no character is even slightly more likely than another. That means the strength figure below is exact, not an estimate: it depends only on the length and the size of the character set.
Password Best Practices
- Length matters: Use at least 12-16 characters for maximum security
- Mix character types: Include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
- Uniqueness: Never reuse passwords across different accounts
- Change on compromise, not on a calendar: Replace a password when a service reports a breach or you suspect it leaked. Forced periodic changes tend to produce weaker, predictable passwords, which is why NIST no longer recommends them
- Password manager: Use a password manager to store and manage your passwords securely
Why Use a Password Generator?
- True randomness: Human-created passwords often follow predictable patterns
- Complexity: Generated passwords include a mix of character types automatically
- Uniqueness: Each generated password is unique and unrelated to your personal information
- Time-saving: Generate strong passwords instantly without thinking
- Security: Cryptographically secure random generation ensures unpredictability
Frequently Asked Questions
What password length should I use?
For maximum security, use passwords that are at least 12-16 characters long. Longer passwords (20+ characters) are even more secure. Our generator supports passwords from 8 to 128 characters.
Should I include all character types?
Yes, including uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols increases the password's entropy and makes it much harder to crack. However, some systems may have restrictions on certain characters.
Are generated passwords secure?
Yes, our password generator uses the Web Crypto API which provides cryptographically secure random number generation. The passwords are generated locally in your browser and never transmitted to any server.
Can I use the same password for multiple accounts?
No, you should never reuse passwords. If one account is compromised, all accounts using the same password would be at risk. Generate a unique password for each account.
How do I remember all these passwords?
Use a password manager! Password managers securely store all your passwords and can even generate strong passwords for you. Popular options include Bitwarden, 1Password, KeePassXC, and the password managers built into browsers and operating systems.
What is password entropy?
Entropy is the number of bits of randomness in the password: a password with n bits takes up to 2n guesses to find. For a randomly generated password it equals length × log2(character set size); with all four character types (88 characters) each character adds about 6.5 bits. Below 40 bits is weak, 60+ is reasonable for online accounts, and 80+ resists even fast offline attacks. Our guide password entropy explained walks through the math with worked examples.
